Hello all!
First of Id like to point out that Im pretty new to Linux and LTS so
please forgive me all my possible stupid questions =)
I got an assignment at work to try to make a diskless workstation. After
not much searching I came across the Linux Terminal Server Project and
it seemed to be everything I really needed. As it turned out it was just
the right thing. After installing the RPM packages on my RedHat 7.0
server I did have some problems getting the workstations to boot. I
found the answer after a bit of investigation, turned out 3Com NICs do
not suppot the original form of the LTS kernels ( or something like that ).
Now I had everything working more or less. I changed network from the
default 192.168.0. to 10.0.22. that is used where I work. Even after this
change I got everything working.
The next assignment I got was to install a printer to use with OpenOffice.
After some more research I ended up trying to install PDQ. I didnt have
much luck I finally got a printer installed using Gnomes printtool. The
printer is a HP LaserJet 1100 connected using SMB to connect to a
Windows NT4 server. After this the workstations wouldnt boot
anymore!?!
After the installation of the printer I have noticed these changes:
duringboot there is one FAILED message: RPC unable to mount ( or
something like that )
I have to restart /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs and /etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap ( I
suspect this has to do with the FAILED RPC mount )
The workstation boots normally until X should start. The grayish
background and the mousepointer appears but thats where it stops.
After a moment XDM: too many retransmissions appears in the
messages that are shown when I press Ctrl+Alt+F1
/var/log/messages and /var/log/security gives me no clues to what is
wrong
Cheers,
Andy
Any ideas anyone?
