For whatever it may be worth, you might not want to use those "unused 3 or 4
wires" in the CAT5 cable in the manner described below.  It *is* a very
clever idea, but gigabit ethernet supposedly requires all 8 wires in the
cable.  This "time-saver" trick today might cost you big headaches in the
future, if you ever want to upgrade to gigabit speeds.
