We are going to need more information to help you with your install.
 I'll elaborate-

What point is this? When it is loading or booting the kernel? When it
is trying to build the XF86Config-4 file?

I may be wrong about this, but in runlevel 4 it doesn't setup the
XF86Config file. This sentence confuses me. Runlevel 4 leaves the
terminal at a telnet prompt.

This makes me want to see what the path in dhcp.conf is set to for your
kernel. It is possible that it is an invalid path, or that it is trying
to load the lpp kernel which can cause problems, and should only be used
when everything is setup and runnign smoothly. If it is a kernel
problem, you probably wouldn't have problems setting up X, but long
before that, like when you are trying to load the modules for the NIC.

What are the last lines printed on the terminal screen before it hangs?
