Peter,

Ah, the old S3 chipset.  That chip isn't supported by
XFree86 4.x.  So, you need to use XFree86 3.3.6.

Download the ltsp_x336_S3 package and install it.

Then, in the lts.conf file, set:

     XSERVER = S3

That should do it.
