I am booting off the floppy image eb-5.0.4-3c905c-tpo.lzdsk, which I got from
rom-o-matic. I have an ethernet card labeled 3c905cx-txnm. The disk boots, it gets an
IP from DHCP, it boots the kernel off TFTP, but then it panics when trying to mount
the roof fs. This has happens both with the kernel I compiled myself (2.4.13) when the
root fs is an NFS mount:
NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux NET4.0
ds: no socket drivers loaded!
VFS: Cannot open root device "nfs" or 00:ff
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:ff
and with the ltsp stock kernel (2.4.9), which uses a more complicated ramdisk mount:
NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux NET4.0
VFS: Cannot open root device "ram0" or 01:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00
I have sniffed the boots from the server using ethereal, and in neither case is there
any NFS activity at all, either failed of successful! All network activity just stops
after the TFTP kernel transfer. So it doesn't appear to be an NFS problem.
Can anyone give me a hint how to go about solving this problem? It's driving me crazy.
