I struggled with this for a bit too, then I discovered the
secret.

First of all, I right click the icons and delete them.
That gets em off the desktop.  The problem is, next time
you log in, they magically appear again.

But, that can be fixed too.

If you run the KDE configuration, you can change a setting
in the 'Desktop' screen.

Kmenu -> Preferences -> Look & Feel -> Desktop

In the first group of checkboxes, look for
  'Enable Dynamic Desktop Devices'
and un-check it.

Magically, the icons don't re-appear the next time you log in.
