When you have it set on run level 3, one of the last things the startup 
script will do is build the xf86config-4 file.  It should report that it is 
doing this, and then go to the command prompt.

I would guess that your system is doing that if you can find the file in 
/tmp.  Next, I would try /tmp/start_ws.  If that gets you into X, then check 
run level 5 for the script that issues this command.
