Thanks for your reply.

Perhaps I was not very clear about what I am trying to accomplish. I am
able to play music from the workstation. I haven't tried mp3's but I can
play wav files using "esdplay".

The things that do not work is getting regular (system) sounds from the
workstation. This includes the startup sound from kde, sounds generated from
using instant messaging applications as well as sounds from games that use
oss (including quake 3d).

I have never been able to obtain these system sounds from the workstation 
coming
out of the workstation speakers. They do have volume controls.


Do you or anyone else know what is missing in order to get this working?
