Hi Jim,

Lazy man's LTSP terminal with obsolete Sun Sparc HowTo :

(does not remove disk/fan noise or eliminate failed disks)

Set sparcy to use a static IP on your LTSP workstation subnet. (edit
/etc/hosts and /etc/hostname.le0). Remove or rename /etc/defaultrouters
/etc/resolv.conf, make sure no services are running (sendmail for example) )

Then as root run

# X -query ltsp.xdmcp.server.ip

You are done. Sparcy is behind LTSP firewall so its safe from hackers,
XDMCP brings the GDM//KDM/XDM login screen to the sparc. All software runs
on the LTSP server just like always. Put the above line in the startup
scripts to do this on bootup.

Disadvantages: Sparcs have the bad habit of writing console messages. You
will be running X11R5 instead of X11R6. HD can be noisy, can fail.

XDMCP on Win2K HowTo:

Another neat way to access the XDMCP server from Windows 2000/NT/XP:

Install cygwin (www.cygwin.com) with the supplied xfree86.

Create a ltsp-server.bat file by modifiying the sample startxwin.bat (in
/usr/X11R6/bin) file:

Modify the line containing the start Xwin to look likebline below: [make
sure you are editing the line in the :USE-B-SWITCH portion for NT/2K]

start /B XWin -query ltsp.xdmcp.server.ip -from ip.of.nt.box

Create a shortcut on your desktop, change its icon, and lo and behold a
double click brings up the login screen on the LTSP box. It is much faster
than running KDE on cygwin even though I have a PIV 1.4Ghz win2k box.

Disadvantage: Plain text in the clear over the X connection.

Enjoy,

---Venkat.
