Ours do not even start network activity...

Thank you for the detailed description.
We now have one IGEL using LTSP-3.0, but we had to insert another NIC, a
3C905CX-TXM
which was in our "spare" box...
This way, I could boot the IGEL/J using PXE and Mandrake's current
cooker kernel
(I wrote a script which integrates Mandrake's kernel into LTSP 3.0
instead of the
ltsp_kernel package).
Everything is fine, even with XFree86-4, as used by LTSP.
Only the hardware doew not allow for 1280x1024 with 24 bit color, there
are
"shadows" and other artifacts on the screen.
