Centralized management is one of the main advantages of LTSP.  Having
the operating system on the desktops takes this advantage away, and
having different distributions on different desktops makes the problem
worse.

If you are willing to set it up yourself (this isn't part of LTSP), you
could use cron to run rsync at night to keep the desktops synchronized. 
This would reduce some of your network overhead during the day by moving
some files around at night.

I probably would not try rsync unless I had to; it's more work for a
smaller return.  Instead, I would try LTSP with ssh or LBX.  Ssh can
compress all network traffic, and LBX can make X less network-hungry. 
Make sure you use local apps and local swap, and LTSP will work fine on
a 10Mb network with a small number of workstations.
