Cobus,
consider that the LTSP terminals do not have an RPM database.  Their
filesystem has been trimmed down to a minimum, deliberately.  For this
to work, you will need to install rpm and everything it depends on into
/opt/ltsp/i386/.

This is an interesting idea; keep us posted on your work!
