There currently is NOT an option to run the display manager
locally. So, just run it on the server. It's easier anyway.

Sorry, that's a window manager / desktop environment question. Others
are certainly more capable of answering that than I am.

Root gets mounted Read-only, not rw. But, either way, you can still
mount directories such as /home and /shared. no problem.
