I'm wanting to use LTSP to remote-boot all of my servers. Basically I will have a few Qmail servers, a few Apache servers, a few LDAP servers, etc. all booted via LTSP. I have quite a few diskless workstations to use up and a high performance server. All file systems will be mounted to the main server via NFS or some other file system and the high performance server will have 1-2 hotbackups in case it fails. I'm planning on connecting all of the servers to the remote-boot server via fibre channel, or gigibit at the very least, on a private network dedicated to the servers to try to get a handle on bandwidth bottlenecks if there are any. I can purchase diskless servers for around $400 and spend about $4000 on the high performance server. So I could theoretically save $2600 per server by going diskless. All of the data will be stored on the main server even if they weren't diskless so I don't think I'll have a problem there. So, is there a better solution for remote-booting in a server environment?? I think all I need to do is get authentication to work on the workstations and that's it. If I can log directly into the workstation via telnet or other, which is not possible right now, then I think everything else should work. I currently have ports 25, 110, 111 running on 16 of my LTSP workstations so Qmail is functional but not until I can authenticate to the workstation. In a nutshell, I want LTSP servers...not LTSP workstations.
