Usage situation 1: X terminals in an engineering environment
Half dozen permanent LTSP clients and a couple dozen part time clients.
The clients boot to the XDMCP chooser so the user can select among
a dozen or so servers that have different combinations of engineering
and productivity applications installed. The part time clients are
single-boot Windows, with a desktop icon for VNC that indirects and
provides exactly the same XDMCP chooser activity inside a Windows frame.
When the user needs full X performance with 3D acceleration and none
of the overhead of the Micrsoft OS, an Etherboot floppy invokes LTSP.

Side note: Why so many servers and so few user client stations ?
Most engineering work occurs using text-only sessions under SSH
so legacy Windows and Linux desktops use putty or ssh respectively.
Obviously, as those legacy machines become relatively underpowered
for independent use, they get converted into dedicated LTSP clients.

Usage situation 2: Hardware development
When developing software that operates computer-attached hardware,
differences in computer chassis easily impact performance/capabilities.
LTSP lets every hardware controlling PC ...
(a) be a convenient terminal from which to control the test
(b) immediately receive software updates via the NFS filesystem
(c) easily switch kernel versions from a central repository

Neither of these are standard uses for LTSP, of course.
