Thanks for the tip John. Initially, i was interested in imici because it was able to communicate across windows / linux platforms (which is what i really wanted), but i was concerned of the licensing cost.
So, i decided to use an existing windows open license messenger app (which some of our users also are already familiar with), run it using wine over a local_apps LTSP environment.
