I tried a 486DX-100 16 MB Ram and a PCI bus about six months ago I run
OpenOffice on my server. I don't remember any problems with it, but I
will dust it off and see if I can duplicate your problems. The secret to
using old computers is to invest in a decent Video Card. If your 486 has
an old ISA bus you are out of luck as this will always be slow. PCI or
VESA local bus at a pinch. I have tried both, PCI is the winner, which
is what you would expect.

In Australia I can buy a decent PCI card for $60 which is about $30 US
