Daniel,
it can be done, all right, but i wouldn't know where to start the
search, other than in your head. i did something similar, based on user,
but your idea of basing default printer on the worksation is better. here
is how you can do it reasonably easily:

1. decide if you want to replace lpr with a wrapper, or just want to creat
"A Local Printer" - if it starts with "A" it comes on top of the list.

2. create a script that will handle selection. you could have one file
with records for the workstations that the script would "grep" through
based on the local ws name.

3. the same script might create the proper print command on the fly - you
need to be able to select the right drivers for ghostscript, or direct
printing for that matter. the line could look like:

ws051:gs -q -sDEVICE=cdj550 -sOutputFile="|lpr -PLOCALPRINTERNAME" -

remove the first word and the rest is a command to print a postscript file
to an hp deskjet that is defined on the system as LOCAPRINTERNAME. don't
forget to have a trailing blank after the last "-" on command line - it
helps.

i like what i just described so much that i am going to change my stuff,
which is based on user
julius

p.s. "to sie musi dac wyciagnac" jak powiedzial hydraulik na widok puzonu.
