Hi- I'm having a problem with LTSP clients having a strange 30
second delay before starting X. This is on RedHat 7.2 with
ltsp_core-3.0.4-0 and ltsp_x_core-3.0.1-1

The client boots at runlevel 5, and gets to the start_ws line.
Then the screen goes completely black for just over 30 seconds,
then shows the expected X startup-- unitialized video garbage
graphics for 1 second, default black and white dot pattern for
a second, then blue GDB background and GDM login prompt.

If I change to run level 3, the shell comes up immediately after
the kernel is loaded. If I then run /tmp/start_ws, it reproduces the
problem with the 30 second black screen followed by X screen
initialization and GDM.

30 second delays always make me suspicious of resolver problems.
While I don't know if that is the cause here, I do know I also
have a resolver problem. Switching to run level 3, I can verify
that no names resolve.

The client nsswitch.conf has the default line:
  hosts: files nisplus nis dns

I'm not using NIS, but not even "files" works! My client /etc/hosts
has:

  127.0.0.1 localhost <workstation-name>
  199.165.142.10 server

Ping localhost or ping server both give back the same error:

ping: <whatever>: Resolver Error 0 (no error)

Yes, everything works with IP addresses.

I know this has come up on the list before, apparently unanswered
as far as I can find in the list archives.

Anyone have any clues? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

- Alan
