Thanks everyone for your help the other day with this problem.

I have moved on a little since but not very far. I had an interesting
email that told me I should be using vmlinuz-2.4.9-ltsp-5 and not -6 as I
have been doing if I have any 486 machines. (Not seen this on web site) I
have got a couple of these and so i decided to change to -5. I found the
above file and placed it in tftpboot/lts and then loaded the dhcpd.conf
file into gedit and changed all the -6 to -5.

I then re-booted the server and now found that DHCP was broken and that
workstations no longer got as far as asking for the kernel. I spent some
time trying to work out what I'd done wrong but found nothing. I asked a
mate for help, he popped round and told me I had no DHCP installed. I just
don't get it, the stations were getting their IPs two days ago.

Anyway, he installed dhcp for me (a seriously non trivial job, I couldn't
have done it) After this, the work stations got further than ever before
and did load their kernels. they failed at the point of needing X-windows
which I had not installed so far.

I next tried to install x-windows but it failed (what a surprise) telling
me that it was dependant on lts_core which I know damn well is installed.
The only two ltsp packages that are installed are lts_core-3.0.4 and
ltsp_kernel-3.0.3.

So now I'm utterly stuck again. It seems to me that you need to be a Linux
expert to install LTSP and that the instructions on the web site should be
regarded as reminder notes for those who know what they're doing.

I now don't know if I should give up altogether on LTSP because it is a
nightmare to install or clean my hard disc and start again or continue
with my current mess. For our school to use LTSP I must be able to build a
system myself from scratch and currently that looks a little unlikely.

How do you clean Linux off a hard disc? Fdisk on a W98 boot disc won't
touch it.

Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers,

Very disheartened Bob.
