Hm. startx usually does not start the display manager (xdm or gdm),
but runs X and the commands in ~/.xsession (or, at least in Debian, if
there is no ~/.xsession, the window manager set as system default
(/usr/bin/x-window-manager is a symlink to
/etc/alternatives/x-window-manager which is a symlink that points to
the real binary. I think Red Hat 7.3 uses the same alternatives
system)

What distribution do you use?

(~/.xsession should work for all, but it's not The Right Way, partly
since you must manually add it when a new user is added).
