Usually one uses one method or the other - the hosts file or DNS.  Unless
you need to reference the machines by name for purposes of sending email
or using other network utilities between them e.g., talk, then there is no
compelling reason to set it up.

If you installed via RPM files, then it probably ran the initialize
script.

AFAIK, that's normal.  You would be reading the X configuration from the
RH server.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the same screen", but as long as you got to
a login screen, then it would seem that things are working.  Changing the
apprearance of the screen would be a metter of finding and tweaking the
configuration file which specifies the graphic image to be displayed.
