As I remember I messed around with one of the last entries in gdm.conf (I think the servers - section) and I had the same prob. But that was on my Desktop (non-networked) machine. On your setup it happens only with one machine ..... hmmmm. You're sure you disabled the firewall (don't know if this advise makes sense for your problem - I just tell you everything I would check :))? Isolate that it is definitely not a hardware problem - I've seen similar things happen because of bad hardware like badblocks on the server-harddisk, flaky ram, a half-bad graphics-chip, a bad mobo and even badly crimped cables!
