For what it is worth, my experiments with running X program at a remote server over WAN showed that I would get best performance (measured as FPS in glxgears) by combining ssh compression with the use of lbxproxy (low bandwidth X). Note however that many on this list have proposed the use of other protocols such as tightvnc and tarantella (?) for WANs. -- Hans Ekbrand
