Setting up a ltsp client/server environment

(Server: SuSE 7.3 Kernel 2.4.10-64GB-SMP
Supermicro Dual XEON,
ltsp-core 3.0.5,
isc dhcpd 3.0rc12-47,
bootdisc etherboot 5.0.7 for NIC-Typ via-rhine
from www.rom-o-matic.net
Client: AMD K2-6, Gigabyte GA5-AX with via-rhine NIC)

was successful for one client machine but fails with others of identical hardware
equipment. (Maybe
the NICS origin not from the same production line.)

The client console shows at bootup:
Etherboot 5.0.7 (GPL) Tagged ELF for [VIA 86C100]
 [snip]
IO address E0000 Ethernet Address: 00:40:05:A4:26:A9
 [snip]
Searching for Server (DHCP)...

After this the client hangs.

At the same time the server machine /var/log/messages:
Sep 2 11:23:35 pardosa dhcpd: +ip length 576 disagrees with bytes received 590.
Sep 2 11:23:35 pardosa dhcpd: accepting packet with data after udp payload.
Sep 2 11:23:35 pardosa dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:40:05:a4:26:a9 via eth1
Sep 2 11:23:35 pardosa dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.0.104 to 00:40:05:a4:26:a9 via eth1
!no DHCPREQUEST following!

The same client at windows boot (with network configuration over DHCP) works without
failure:
Sep 2 11:38:24 pardosa dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:40:05:a4:26:a9 via eth1
Sep 2 11:38:24 pardosa dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.0.104 to 00:40:05:a4:26:a9 via eth1
Sep 2 11:38:24 pardosa dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.0.104 (192.168.0.15) from
00:40:05:a4:26:a9
via eth1
Sep 2 11:38:24 pardosa dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.0.104 to 00:40:05:a4:26:a9 via eth1

I guess that in the case of the etherboot the client does not receive the DHCPOFFER.

TIA for any helpful information.
