3C509 works fine, I have heaps of them in LTSP-clients. In your 
/etc/dhcps.conf you put (exactly this!):

option option-128     e4:45:74:68:00:00;
option option-129     "NIC=3c509";

Be aware that if you have the PnP version of 3c509, then the PnP 
feature must be switched off. Use the 3c509 DOS utilities, I have 
heard there is a Linux utility as well, but I have never tried 
that.

There is no need to put irq and io in the option line.
