David,
i have several ltsp servers in production with loads varying from
very light to medium. The biggest problems i have have to do not with
server crash, but with server hang: 2 of my servers tend to just stop
accepting input or pushing output. the traditional heartbeet test doesn't
notice it, because the networking keeps chugging along just fine. i just
have not found a pattern yet, other than that the people using those
servers seem to hate me more then the other users do. it is possible i am
mixing up the cause and effect here.
there is no solution to data loss at server loss because turning
off the write cache destroys the performance. application level
transaction definition and "commit" allow us to keep the damage to almost
0, but at high cost. an inexpensive "minimizer" is a good RAID setup. the
questions to ask are: how much downtime is acceptable given the
exponentially growing cost of making the failover quicker and more
comprehensive. I've been running my business sytems for years without
downtime due to equipment failure and that tinted my view of the value of
a fully automated fail-over. buy good equipment, burn it in and run with
it. my $.02. julius
