Unfortunately, this does not seem to work. It seemed so obvious and I was so hopeful. ;~( I'm in a fully switched environment, so I am not able to easily load tcpdump to see what is actually being transmitted over the wire (we have a sniffer but have not learned how to use it yet). Am I stuck with creating my own image with a different /linuxrc script?
