If you wanted things to work immediately, one way would be to run the
applications locally from which you want to be able to save data.  That
means that you will need to "install" all the applications you want to
run locally into the LTSP root filesystem.

Otherwise, you can look into using the ENBD project to get local floppy
and cdrom support working on your thin client workstations.  This would
allow any application running on the server (for a given user's session)
to access that user's workstation resources (currently only floppy and
cdrom devices are supported).
