Dear ltsp users,
Looking for a little help. I am attempting to set up an terminal
server in our department using the ltsp packages and debian woody. Of
course my university's (RIT) network group will not allow our department
having a dhcp server (though from my reading there should be no problem
since the server would be set up to only respond to our clients and our
university's dhcp server is also set up only to respond to registered
mac addresses). In either case the network group only permits us to use
bootp.
I have setup bootp on the ltsp server and am able to get a test client
to download the kernel. However, on the kernel boot the dhcp client
causes a kernel panic. Just before the panic it says that multiple dhcp
responses have occured. Our server has responded with a dhcp response
(I assume it is refering to our handing out of the ip through bootp) and
our university's network server has also responded with a dhcp response.
Is there anyway to disable the dhcp client on bootup and just have the
system use the ip address assigned during the bootp reply?
Or is it possible to force the dhcp client to use the response from the
dhcp server and ignore the bootp ip handed out. (Note that our dhcp
server on the network gives out static ips for university equipment and
we arepassing the ip assigned to the client through the bootp). The dhcp
and the bootp responses should be handing out the same ip so I don't
know why it is having such a problem.
Or perhaps someone has a better solution.
I know this sound confusing and could easily be resolved by having our
hosts mac taken out of the university dhcp server, but we want the
systems to work when they boot of disk into windows with network support
so they must stay registered.
I would send the exact screen output from the terminal but I am not at
school right now.
Summary of our situation
- cannot setup a dhcp server
- sysadmins for our network dhcp server will not put in the needed
xterminal boot info into the dhcp records for our hosts.
- sysadmins claim that we can use bootp
- we are having conflicts with using bootp and responses from network
dhcp server.
- we don't want to make a private subnet for our systems since our
terminals are distributed across a large building that is already wired
on the main network.
Much thanks for any responses.
