Hi All,

"Quite Some Time ago" I posted this question. No answer and I have been
scanning the mailing list in the hope of getting a clue; but nothing so far.

So here's a repost.

I am running LTSP avery happily. No sign of any errors and the relevant lines
in my lts.conf file:

[family]
X_MODE_1  = 1280x1024  126.5  1280 1312 1472 1696 1024 1032 1040 1068 -HSync
-VSync
X_MODE_2  = 1280x1024  135    1280 1312 1456 1712 1024 1027 1030 1064
SOUND              = Y
SOUND_DAEMON       = esd
VOLUME         = 100 # Speaker & WAVE volume pecentage
SMODULE_01         = auto
RUNLEVEL = 5

The sound card is detected just fine and everything is wonderful. Same results
as on auto, with:

SMODULE_01         = soundcore
SMODULE_02         = uart401
SMODULE_03         = via82cxxx_audio

which also looks just perfect on startup.

HOWEVER, if I actually try to *use* sound on the terminal, I get the error
message:

"Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it."

For example if I run realplay I get this. I get the same thing if I specify
nasd instead of esd.

Questions:

*** MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION ***
How do I debug this? What log files/resources are there to find out what is
already using sound, if that is the issue?

Obviously I would not mind if anyone pops out with The Answer but right now I
would be happy with some path to follow to detect the problem.

There were no replies last time. If none this time shall I take it to mean "it
either works or not and if not I'm hosed"? If so that would still be useful
information.

While I am at it I have another question. I have used Toms Root Boot which is
also a tiny distribution. But even this comes with an editor. I can edit files
with "vi" (of course not the real vi but close enough) and get by. However
booting into runlevel 3 on an LTSP terminal I haven't figured out how to edit
stuff to try and get things working. I can look at files (using "more") but
I have not figured out how to edit for example the X config file in case
I want to try stuff. Much quicker this way than rebooting. Surely there is
some editor available? If so I haven't seen it in the LTSP docs. And no "find"
either for finding stuff. Is there a list somewhere of what's available?

Thanks for any help, or if not ... I will be continuing to scan the list.
I wuld like to know if anyone alse has seen this even if no solution.
I suspect part of the problem may be that I have a heavily "upgraded" server;
no clean reload since RH5.2 (now on 7.3). This has caused other strange
problems which took a while to track down; maybe this is one more. Might it be
worthwhile doing a clean 7.3 install? If so, backup/restore hell ... groan,
and all my local config to redo. There has to be an easier way ....

One last question, I have a Leadtek A250LE on one client. No support on XFree
yet but might be able to use NVidia drivers. Do I have to rebuild the
LTSP kernel to get this in or is there some other easier path? The docs are
silent on what to do ... not a good sign :-(

Thanks,

Don Pettengill
