just done this (though not on a server running ltsp) 

x on the server didn't startup check out: 
/etc/sysconfig/desktop was set to DESKTOP instead of DISPLAYMANAGER (new in
v8) 

the default font for a shell didn't work - selecting the clean font solved
the problem

the backspace key was no longer mapped.

mileage may vary :)
