   Well there is always another solution to every problem, just maybe not elegant, 
easy or tried! :-)

  I am just starting to muck with the nbd support for a new project but the tying the 
user to a machine seems to be so that the server knows which workstations block device 
to use when you ask for access to "the floppy disk."

  A quick thought is to create the device files during the users log-in process using 
the $DISPLAY (which workstation) and $HOME (which user) variables. This would enable 
the user to 'float'. Of course you'd have to think this through because I can
foresee some issues - i.e. what happens if the user logs into two terminals at the 
same time?
