I use gdm when I have to (to get the face browser on touch, keyboardless
clients) but xdm when I can.

edit gdm.conf and un-comment the server=1 line and watch your
machine burn.
I want 4 local displays

I've done what you want with xdm.
ie chooser => differant servers that works with standard ltsp 3 and goes
for moths without any problems.
