the problem is not neccessarily the vga card. as a first step, try booting
the workstation in runlevel 3 (by specifying RUNLEVEL = 3 in lts.conf) and
starting X by running /tmp/ws_start. after attempting to start X for
several times (this might take a minute or two) you will get the exact
error message.
