Well LTSP is not more than a chain of services, and for hardware that
doesn't work out of the box with X, some manual configuration will be
necessary.

First, are you using the latest X package for ltsp:
ltsp_x_core-3.0.4-i386? This is the only one that has X 4.2, earlier
versions have 4.1 with lesser support for S3 cards.

Now, according to the documentation of X 4.2 even X 4.2 may some
issues with S3 cards (implied by the use of the term "moderately
stable"):

"The s3virge driver in XFree86 4.2.0 supports the S3 ViRGE, ViRGE DX,
GX, GX2, MX, MX+, and VX chipsets. It also supports Trio3D and
Trio3D/2x chips. A majority of testing is done on ViRGE DX chips,
making them the most stable to date. This release has some
stabilization fixes for MX, GX2 and Trio3D, and XVideo support for MX
and GX2.

This driver is moderately stable, however please use caution with any
new install. Please report any problems to [EMAIL PROTECTED] using
the appropriate bug report sheet."

So, If your experiences comes from X 4.1, try 4.2 instead, and if 4.2
is what you got now, then I suggest that you try X 3.3.6,
