The logistics involved with the Javits Center are great. A simple operation frequently requires a Union carpenter with a minimum payment amount.
I would agree that the Wireless access would be a deal maker too.
With respect to showing off hardware I don't think that the Press would be that impressed looking at "old" equipment. I think a fairly basic setup would suffice as long as they were aware that they were using LTSP for their Internet access this would be sufficient to warrant some good press.
If need be I can probably scrounge up several keyboards, mouses/mice? etc. and arrange to drop them off at the Center since I live in NY. Right now I am tripping over keyboards , mice and cables at work. However that situation can change from day to day though.
Let me know if I can pitch in. If I am free then I will be glad to help.

1) Support - I assume you mean that you personally will be at LinuxWorld at
the LTSP booth. Unfortunately I can't attend; too expensive, nowhere to
stay, etc.
2) Cost - I assume you mean that "we" is you or your company, and you will
handle the network hardware (cabling, switch, power strips, nics). If you
are not supplying the gear, then we need to find other donors. There is the
issue of where to put the gear. Brooke was hesitant to commit to additional
tables.
4) Vendor - By vendor I believe Brooke means the Jacob Javits Center or
whomever the Center hires to do the pressroom. She didn't mention a
manufacturer such as HP, only "Operations." Do you have an LTSP server that
can reasonably handle up to 12 workstations? There are 5-6 PCs and 1 Mac
already in the pressroom. If we add another 6 diskless workstations, then
the server would power 6-12 workstations depending on whether the pressroom
vendor is willing to go along.
5) Wireless - This sounds like a deal maker. Brooke is very interested in
wireless LAN access in the pressroom. She said Doc Searls loaned her a WAP
at a recent show. She was embarassed but the journalists liked the easy
access.
Showcase LTSP - Good questions. I have no ready answers. Perhaps a mix of
workstations from Pentium 90-166 (if they have decent video), contemporary
PCs and Jammin-125's would be a good demonstration. The reduced noise would
be evident.
Who has workstations we can borrow? Maybe Jim has an inventory of demo
models he can bring. But does he have monitors, keyboards, mice? I have
plenty of donated P90 and a few P133 boxes from our community tech center
project. The video subsystems are not great, mostly old 1024k S3s. Also
have a supply of well used 15" monitors stashed in a garage. But few
keyboards, no mice and no nics. Not sure how to get this stuff to the
convention center if we need to use it -- our project is all volunteer and
no money.
Should I hand Brooke off to you, Peter?
Tom
1) Support - Should not be a problem. Just need to be sure to schedulebetween booth and Press Room
2) Cost - Also should not be a problem since we can provide labor andshould be able to supply any needed hardware (i.e. cabling, switch, etc.)
3) Reliability - Definitely not a problem!is probably vendor specific. If the vendor is, say, Compaq or HP this would
4) Vendor - Can Brooke ask the vendor if they would be interested? This
be a great way to showcase their hardware if it is Computer Associates well...
5) Wireless - I have a HP WAP I can donate to the effort. If they areonly going to have a T-1 annd only service one room, one WAP would be plenty.
Since we wouldn't be replacing the press room network, I am not sure howwe can showcase LTSP effectively. Most of the benefits to LTSP are "behind
the scenes" - i.e. low end clients, ease of maintaining the system, etc. -
how do we showcase this? Do we go with ratty old clients to show how well
it works or slick looking Jammin-125s or maybe a compilation of clients to
show that it looks and performs the same regardless of what you use?
I think the key is who the vendor is and if they are open to the idea.

Spoke to Brooke Selby on phone. Here's the deal. The pressroom is-------------------------------------------------------
handled by a vendor, either the Jacob Javits Center itself or an outside
supplier. The Operations staff at the convention center work with Brooke
on her specs for the pressroom. Her specs are determined by her
budget, and she can't exceed budget.
Brooke will decide whether the project is feasible based on these concerns:
1. Support - must have LTSP support onsite 24/7 during show.
2. Cost - cannot add to her costs.
3. Reliability - LTSP system cannot fail for more than a few minutes.
4. Vendor - pressroom vendor must be willing to go along with adding
LTSP to their network. The LTSP network will be in addition to the
vendor's pressroom network, not replace it. Vendor may not allow us
to boot their boxes as LTSP clients.
5. Wireless - #1 request from journalists is wireless access.
Additional information.
Media: 180 journalists at show; 12 in press room at any given time;
50 in press room during peak times (lunch, dinner). Many want to
connect their laptops to the LAN via nics or wireless rather than
wait for terminal.
LAN: yes; 1-2 printers on lan, orders 1 printer and adds another
if demand requires it; usually 4 spare ethernet cables for folks
to plug into their laptops; not sure of speed, either ISDN or T1, she's
checking with Operations
Computer Equipment: 5-6 dual boot PCs (Lin/Win); some version of RedHat;
Operations says they can install any version of RedHat specified;
1 Mac; no idea whether switch or hub or speed of LAN
Tables/Electric Service: tables cost money and have to be ordered
in advance, doesn't really want to order more tables; no idea of
electrical service, probably per spec, which affects budget
Wireless: None. Brooke's #1 request is wireless access for pressroom.
She has no budget for it.
Dial-up: There are several phone lines available for dialup access.
What'ya think?
