The 905 uses an EEPROM. Either there's a socket for it or it's soldered
on the board. You can find a list of suitable EEPROMs in the mail
archive, it was posted by a 3Com person, I think the 29C512 is one such
chip.  IIRC some people have also had success putting an EPROM in a DIP
slot, since the pinouts of EPROMs and EEPROMs are compatible after a
fashion, provided you align the bottom edges of the chip and socket.
You can program the EEPROM in situ with the tools found in the
contrib/3c90xutil directory of the Etherboot tarball. There should be
tools to enable the EEPROM at the 3Com site, and IIRC Donald Becker also
wrote one for Linux (www.scyld.com).
