1) Make sure that you have JAVA_HOME environment variable exported from your shell startup script (/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0_03) 2) Make sure that you have JAVA_HOME/bin exported from your PATH environment variable in your startup script. 3) Make sure the command: java outputs the usage information when executed from a newly started command shell (i.e. after making above the environment changes). 4) Run your java program. As there are many ways of doing this, I can help you with the specifics once you get to here.
