Well guys I found a solution to booting a mini-itx from compact flash and pointing it to a linux server running xdm. I downloaded a 32M compact flash image from this site. I then replaced the startup scripts with my own and overwrote the password and shadow files with my own.
http://locustworld.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownload&cid=4 I am not ready to release the hacked image yet as I still have some cleanup to do but if you wish to play this is a great way to start. You will need a 17 Dollar compact flash to ide adaptor and a 32 M compact flash card 20 - 30$ and a usb reader writer to burn images. I personally use a pny flash card reader. Burn the image to the compact flash and then mount it to make your changes. Once you get a image that you want you can duplicate it with dd. To produce numerous cards you just cat the image to a card and you are ready to go. You should be able to get the box together for 250 to 275 dollars and best of all, no moving parts ...
