Could be that it depends on the initialization of the NIC. If
etherboot leaves the card in a not clearly-deinitialized state, kernel
could fail to initialize them correctly (but not notice the problem).
What versions of etherboot do you use, respectively?
BTW: We had NFS problems with one of the prepacked LTSP kernels; it
had something to do with the NFSv3-kernel-support - it was not on me
to fix it so no details available right now.
