I had the same problem I managed a network of computers (30 computers in all) I needed to have some kind of tool for remote monitoring and troubleshooting and the best there is for free is vnc (tightvnc that is), but we are connected thru a router and also thru a DNS server (of course) via gateway and so on and so on, I also reviewed the option of forwarding the port, etcetera, but could never make it work i even subscribed to the vnc mailing list and they re assure me that I needed to work with the computer enginners (we are a gobvernment of a state in Mexico) to make something like that work, I didn't like that, since my network is a sub network and I am the manager I didn't like to ask anybody to open anything and I trusted myself to try and work this thing out, my solution was a good one and works like heaven it is to make a PPP server (on Sco Openserver 5.0.5 but I am working on doing this with my linux box too of course ) in my work use proxy-arp so that I can see the whole network, also I wanted to make the server call me and not me call the server (hey I don't want to pay for working at home at least my company should pay those calls anyway!! hu!!) and I did it all with the help of great documentation and great tools kppp, squid and the like, my knowledge of linux really expanded to a point I think there is no important thing you cannot do with it if you really want to and really put yourself to the task, my advise is to keep trying hard and if you make it thru port forwarding than don't forget to write your experience it is very much a great way to contribute as technical documents are good but to share a personal experience is much better.
