Pedro, Those Realtek drivers are perhaps the most mature developed Linux Software, ever! a good cost-effective choice.
I think to match a cheap half-decent Video card you would need to outline the basics. Between 2Mb-4Mb of Video Memory Preferred PCI driven (I have some 100Mhz Dell's and they have two PCI slots) I would avoid anything to do with S3, the latest XFree86 seems to have MAJOR issues with the Virge Chipset, none of my Optiplexs work correctly, get some sort of hideous ghosting, using the SVGA module seems ok but with 256colours. I also hate Trident and SiS chips, Neomagic also get thumbs down (Hardware 3D pipelining my arse) Whats left? ATI Rage should be fairly cheap, come in PCI and have a decent chipset. What about Matrox Gxxx series, maybe too expensive? very popular for their time, also come in PCI versions. Voodoo? nargh, not in quantity and not at the price you would want to pay. Anything else?
