Vice, Check in the LTSP docs under "Gray Screen With X" for help with tracking down the problem. You X server and/or your Display Manager (XDM/KDM/GDM) is not accepting connections from the remote display.
If you still have trouble try starting in Run Level 3 and see if that works. Finally, if still, still have troubles posting what messages are appearing on the client screen would be helpful, as well as what DIsplay Manager you are using.
