> What is a good win98-ish GUI? *** This is a really common question with a bunch of good answers. You might want to take a look at the ltsp mailing list archives. ANyways my favorite is the ICE window manager (www.icewm.org) it has a Windows XP theme as well as a Win98ish look theme(s).
> As we have not yet run terminal services, what if any special administration > is nessicary? *** I'm not sure what you mean about special administration as administration is required no matter what setup you have. You'll find terminal service *alot* easier to handle because of centralized administration. > How much server resoruces should be budgeted for each workstation? *** Another common question and the answer it depends. It's not hard to figure out though. Assuming you are running true thin clients (not local apps) you take the number of terminals you have concurrently running and take a large app that each terminal might be running at the same time. So say you have 10 terminal clients and that might want to run Star Office simultaneously. Each copy of Star Office uses (approx) 55 Megs RAM so your SERVER would require 10 x 55 or 550 MB of RAM to accomodate (plus additional ram of course for the server itself). So this gives you a rough idea of the server memory requirements. As for the terminals they dont need much (32Megs suffices). > What is the stability of the terminals? *** They dont do much so quite stable > What is the stability of the server? *** Linux is infamous for its stability. Once configured a server will act the same on Day 265 as it did on day 1. > Can a user hang just his terminal? *** Possible > Will a hung terminal hang the server? *** Nope. > What uptimes can we expect from a terminal server? ***Once configured properly the server will run consistantly. We have 38 LTSP servers in our school district and our "average" uptime: 1:11pm up 165 days And thats average. Servers are taken down to swap out hardware or power failures. > Can standard redhat updates break k-12ltsp? *** Not generally, but it depends what gets updated. > I am shure as we begin this project more questions will come up, we look > forward to your reply and exploring terminal services on Linux. > > ------------------------------------------------------- This sf.net email is sponsored by:ThinkGeek Welcome to geek heaven. http://thinkgeek.com/sf _____________________________________________________________________ Ltsp-discuss mailing list.
