With CUPS, in KDE applications (kmail, konqueror) when users type CTRL + P,
they get a little print dialog box (similar to what is displayed in MS
Windows) that lists the various printers available. They can filter the
printers list to only show the printers that they want to print to. In
OpenOffice, the print dialog is different, but the list of printers available
is still there.

Nope. I just tried it with an Excell Spreadsheet and it prints fine...

I have experienced, that when users have this kind of problem printing (no
errors, but no output either), it's often because their document or printer
output is set to A4 sheet size. My printers only have letter sized trays and
so the print job just dumps whithout errors.

Under Format > Page make sure the page size is set to the correct size for
your printer, and in Open Office, CTRL + P > Properties make sure it's also
set to the correct paper size.

Hope that helps.
