Step by step instructions on what MS calls remote desktop sharing can be
found at: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=301527. You can also find
more info about remote desktop on XP at:
http://www.labmice.net/WindowsXP/NetworkingXP/remote_desktop.htm

What I meant if that terminal services, as it is used on a server, will
not work on XP. On XP there is desktop sharing, it is not the same, and
it is used to provide remote support to a novice user and works like
NetMeeting. There is a terminal services service on XP and you must make
sure it is started (the default) and you are correct that it is policy
driven, but it can only provide a single instance of remote access,
unlike Terminal Services, and it takes over the display and can take
over the keyboard and mouse of the XP system. Remember, MS wants you to
purchase Win2k to perform true terminal services, not use the much
cheaper XP for the same task.

I know this is somewhat off the LTSP topic, sorry for the hijack. The
main reason I am starting to use LTSP is I am tired of dealing with
these kinds of issues I have had with MS in the past. It is refreshing
to me not to have to deal with MS licensing anymore.

I hope this answers your questions.

systemhelp needed.

Norine,

I will be honest, I have some confusion with your reply. I have an XP
Pro system here. The system has under the "Local Security Settings,
Local Policies, User Rights Assignments" a Policy called "Allow logon
through Terminal Services". There is also a group on the system called
"Remote Desktop Users".

I would interpret these two items, when setup to work together, would
allow a user to be added to the system and then added to the Remote
Desktop Users group. The RDU group could then be added (Is already
there by default) to the Allow Logon Policy thus enabling that user to
connect to the XP Pro box from a remote location using a Terminal
Service client software.

I believe that this is the case but have not been able to find anyone
who can verify this functionality. If this is the case, then I need to
find out why, rdesktop does not seem to work as the XP Pro TS Client.

I believe that I am dealing with a permissions or missing service issue
since the reply to trying to connect is a "connection refused" message.

Thanks,
