Sounds like your computer doesn't have a PCI bus.

Maybe an old 486 with ISA or VLbus.

The initrd isn't setup to handle non-pci bus systems.

You could hack the linuxrc script in the initrd, by downloading the 
ltsp_initrd_kit.

BUT, if you don't have a PCI bus, then you probably don't have
a graphics chipset that is capable of running X.

When people ask me what do I consider the bare minimum hardware
for an LTSP client, my answer is typically, "Anything with a PCI bus
and 8mb of ram".
