If the screen is just going black, then it sounds like the card is over-driving the monitor, and the monitor is shutting down. It is usually indicated by a flashing LED on the monitor.
you can control the frequencies that are sent to the monitor using the X_MODE_? entries in the lts.conf file. Take a look at this document for help with that: http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/modelines.html That should take care of it.
