[1] Wrong XServer selected (that's the software driving the video
   hardware on the client, simply spoken)
[2] KDM/GDM/XDM login manager not activated for XDMCP remote logins
[3] faulty hardware
[4] screen is turned off
[5] ...

You see, plenty chances to not get the login screen.
What does your "blank" screen look like? Chess-like black-and-white
fields, with a large X-shaped mouse cursor? Black with some text
mourning about configuration issues?
What happens on booting the machine - at which point does the screen
go blank (if not one of the cases above which point to [2] or [1],
respectively)?
